They loaded ships with everything they owned and ventured into the unknown – not because the journey was safe, but because what waited beyond the horizon promised something better. BayFolio was born from this same human spirit. In 2008, one of our co-founders watched his parents lose their retirement savings to poor investment advice. The financial experts they trusted had navigated them straight into a storm. As a financial advisor with a passion for history, he remembered how ancient mariners used stars, maps, and experience to find safe passage through dangerous waters. He built BayFolio on a simple truth: > people invest for the same reasons explorers once sailed – **to discover prosperity, secure a better future, and explore new possibilities**. Today, BayFolio guides clients through market volatility with the wisdom of seasoned navigators. We understand that behind every account number is a family seeking security, a dream waiting for funding, or a future being carefully built. Like the merchants who calculated risks against potential discoveries, we help our clients balance protection and growth. Like the captains who adjusted their sails to changing winds, we adapt strategies to shifting markets. At BayFolio, we don't just manage investments. We honor the profound human journey toward prosperity that begins with the courage to venture beyond the shore. ### Navigate. Invest. NSE holidays are days when the stock exchange is closed and no mutual fund transactions are processed. In 2026, there are 16 trading holidays. Your SIPs, purchases, and redemptions placed on these days will be processed on the next available business day, using that day's NAV. #### What happens to my SIP if it falls on an NSE holiday? Your SIP instalment doesn't disappear — it simply executes on the next business day. The units are allotted at that day's NAV, not the holiday NAV. This is standard practice across all AMCs. No action needed from your side. #### Do mutual fund NAVs get updated on NSE holidays? No. NAV is calculated only on business days when markets are open. On a holiday, the previous business day's NAV remains in effect. Transactions submitted on a holiday are processed at the next business day's NAV. #### What is Muhurat Trading? Muhurat Trading is a special one-hour trading session held on Diwali evening, considered auspicious for investing. It is conducted on NSE and BSE even though the day is officially a trading holiday. Mutual fund transactions, however, are generally not processed during this session. #### Does the holiday list apply to all mutual funds — equity, debt, and hybrid? The NSE holiday list applies to equity and hybrid funds. Debt funds have a separate set of clearing holidays tied to the RBI and banking system calendar. If you are managing debt fund transactions, check the Clearing Holidays tab on the NSE/AMFI website as well. #### When is this page updated? We update this page every year once SEBI/NSE publishes the official holiday calendar, typically by November–December of the preceding year. Bookmark `bayfol.io/nse-holidays` — the URL stays the same, only the content changes. ## Posts ### Your Gulf salary is not a safety net URL: https://bayfol.io/nri-safety-net/ Last updated: 2026-07-15T03:53:11.000Z You've done the hard part. You left home, you're earning tax-free, the apartment is nice, the weekends are nicer. By every measure visible on Instagram, you've made it. And yet there's a thought that shows up at odd hours. Usually when a colleague gets his notice period, or when your father calls about a hospital visit, or when the visa renewal comes around again. A man on [r/dubai](https://www.reddit.com/r/dubai/comments/8ls9fs/earnings%5Fwith%5Fno%5Fsavings/?ref=bayfol.io) put it plainly after four years in the city: “Working here, not saving. Can't work all my life. If no savings, all these years are lost.” He wasn't broke. He had a job, a car, a family, no debt. What he didn't have was anything that would still be his if the job ended. *So what exactly is holding all this up?* ## What happens if you lose your job in the Gulf? Honestly: your income is holding it up, and very little else. The Gulf is built for people who can take care of themselves. There is no pension waiting for you (a gratuity check when you leave, yes, but no income for your old age) and no state healthcare once you stop working. The UAE's unemployment insurance (ILOE) is real and it does pay out — but read what claiming it involves. Your visa gets cancelled as part of the process. Then you receive 60% of your basic salary, capped, for a maximum of three months, while the clock runs on your permission to stay. People who [have been through the claim](https://www.reddit.com/r/dubai/comments/1fjpm7y/my%5Filoe%5Funemployment%5Finsurance%5Fuae%5Fclaim/?ref=bayfol.io) describe it as a bridge to the next job. Nobody describes it as a safety net for a life. Saudi Arabia's SANED scheme doesn't cover expats at all. That's the deal, and it's a fair one. You keep everything you earn. In exchange, nobody carries you if you fall. Lose the job, and your residency, your bank accounts, even your children's school enrollment all sit downstream of a visa that just started expiring. ****Three questions worth sitting with:** If your job ended this quarter, how many months could your family stay in the Gulf? Of everything you've built here, what would still be yours after the visa is cancelled? And how many years have you been earning tax-free — where did those savings actually go? If any of those answers made you uncomfortable, that discomfort is data. Most NRIs respond to it by earning harder. Very few respond by building the thing that actually answers the question: a base in India that grows whether you're employed or not. ## The part nobody says out loud The tax savings you moved for rarely disappear into taxes. They disappear into lifestyle. The Gulf will happily absorb every dirham or dinar you let it — brunches, upgrades, the car you didn't need. And there's a second leak: sending everything home. Parents' expenses, a sibling's wedding, the house extension, the village contribution. You fund everyone's future except your own, and after twenty years in the Gulf you come home a provider with no provision. Generosity is not the mistake; confusing remittances with savings is. The family you carried will one day need you to have carried yourself too. The NRIs who leave wealthy are not the ones who earned the most. They're the ones who automated their investing before the city, or the demands from home, could get to the money. ## Why India, when you live in the Gulf? Think about where your life actually points. Your parents are in India. Your children's education may well be. Your retirement almost certainly is. You earn in dirhams and riyals, but your future expenses are mostly in rupees. Some will tell you the rupee's depreciation makes India a bad place to invest — and if your future were in dollars, they'd have a point. But if your future is in India, a corpus in rupees is matched to the life it has to fund. The real mismatch is having no corpus there at all. One distinction, so we're precise: keep an accessible Gulf emergency reserve for the first six to twelve months of any shock. The Indian corpus is for everything after that. ## The tax advantage most Gulf NRIs never use That vulnerability explains why you need a base. The Gulf tax advantage explains why you can build it faster than almost anyone else. Here the Gulf NRI holds cards that NRIs in New York or London genuinely envy. American and British NRIs face punitive home-country taxation on Indian mutual funds. You face none — there is no personal income tax waiting for you in Riyadh or Dubai on your Indian gains. Better still, if you are a tax resident of the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Oman, the India tax treaty (DTAA) position on mutual fund gains is unusually favorable. Bahrain is the exception — no treaty is in force yet. The documentation matters: a valid Tax Residency Certificate and the correct filings are what convert the treaty position into an actual outcome, so take proper advice before assuming anything. Now compare that with what actually gets sold to Gulf NRIs: 25-year offshore “savings plans” with exit penalties that can consume most of your early contributions, unrated bonds promising 12%, off-plan property that takes years to exit. A SEBI-regulated mutual fund you can redeem from anywhere in the world, in days, and repatriate within RBI limits, is a different kind of asset. “But my Dubai apartment is my safety net.” It's the most common pushback, so let's take it seriously: Dubai property can be a fine investment. What it can't be is your safety net — it sits in the same economy as your job, so the downturn that takes your income is the downturn that hits your asset. It's illiquid precisely when you need money fast, and if you leave, you're an absentee landlord. A safety net has to stand outside the thing it's protecting you from. That's what the India base is for. ## Frequently asked questions ### Can NRIs in the UAE invest in Indian mutual funds? Yes. UAE and other Gulf NRIs can invest through an NRE or NRO account with full KYC. Unlike US or UK NRIs, Gulf residents face no home-country tax on the gains, and most AMCs accept Gulf-based investors without restriction. ### Is there TDS when NRIs redeem Indian mutual funds? Yes — tax is deducted at source on the gain when an NRI redeems. Gulf residents (except Bahrain) may then have a favorable treaty position to claim, typically through their Indian tax return, with a valid Tax Residency Certificate. The rates and process depend on your situation; this is exactly the kind of thing to get advice on rather than assume. ### Should I stop investing in India because the rupee depreciates? If your future expenses are in rupees — parents, children's education, retirement in India — then rupee assets match your real liabilities. Depreciation is a genuine cost for someone retiring in dollars; it's largely irrelevant for someone whose life leads back to India. ### How do I start? NRE/NRO account, mutual fund KYC as an NRI, treaty documentation if applicable, and a monthly automated investment plan sized to your savings capacity. In practice the setup takes a few weeks; the discipline is the part that compounds. ## The bottom line Enjoy the lifestyle. You earned it. But answer the nagging thought properly, because it's asking a fair question. The Gulf is where you make your money. India is where your safety net has to be — because nobody else is building you one. **If this is the year you structure it** — the accounts, the treaty documentation, the monthly automation — that's exactly the work we do at BayFolio. If you have an NRI friend or family member who needs to read this, share it with them - they will thank you later. ### The Document Nobody Talks About — Until It's Too Late URL: https://bayfol.io/living-will-amd/ Last updated: 2026-03-15T08:32:42.000Z Honestly? This was not a topic that felt relevant to financial planning. A Living Will — or Advance Medical Directive, as it is formally called in India — seemed like the domain of doctors and lawyers. What did it have to do with portfolios, insurance coverage, or retirement planning? That view changed after seeing what actually happens to families when there is no such document in place. Not once. Repeatedly. A family that had planned everything financially — investments, term insurance, a nominee structure — watched their savings drain over six weeks in an ICU. The patient had no chance of recovery. The doctors knew it. But the family could not agree, and no one had any written guidance from the person who mattered most. Every day of continued treatment was an act of love, yes. But it was also financially and emotionally catastrophic — and entirely avoidable. In another situation, a family faced the opposite problem. One member wanted to stop treatment. Others pushed back. What followed was not just grief — it was conflict, guilt, and a relationship that did not survive the disagreement. Again, no prior directive existed to settle the question. These are not rare stories. They are surprisingly common — and they are precisely what a Living Will is designed to prevent. Is the system perfect? Not yet. The law is ahead of the infrastructure. Hospitals are still catching up. But the document has real value today, and that value will only grow as the framework evolves. Having something in place is meaningfully better than having nothing — because nothing leaves every decision open to interpretation, emotion, and conflict at the worst possible moment. That is why this article exists. Not to be morbid. Not to sell a service. But because the families who have been through this, on both sides of the coin, consistently say the same thing afterward: > *"I wish we had talked about this earlier, when there was still time to do it properly."* ### So What Is a Living Will? A Living Will — formally called an Advance Medical Directive (AMD) in India — is a legal document in which you state, in advance, what medical treatment you do or do not want if you become unable to communicate. Think of the situations where this becomes relevant: - A serious accident leaves you unconscious - A stroke impairs your ability to communicate - A terminal illness progresses to a stage where decisions can no longer be made in real time In any of these situations, the medical team and your family will need to make decisions on your behalf. Without a Living Will, those decisions get made under enormous pressure — often with family members disagreeing, doctors being overly cautious, and nobody truly knowing what you would have wanted. A Living Will removes that uncertainty. It is your voice, preserved in writing, for a moment when you cannot use it. ### What the Law Actually Says In a landmark [ruling](https://www.livelaw.in/top-stories/harish-rana-passive-euthanasia-case-his-family-never-left-his-side-real-love-cares-supreme-court-lauds-parents-525992?ref=bayfol.io), the Supreme Court of India affirmed that every citizen has the right to die with dignity. The court clarified that a patient has the right to refuse medical treatment — including life support — and that this right can be exercised in advance through a valid Advance Medical Directive. One important clarification the court made: what used to be called passive euthanasia is better understood as withdrawing treatment — a globally accepted medical principle, not a controversial ethical act. The reframing matters because it removes unnecessary fear and stigma from the concept. > *In plain terms: the Supreme Court has recognized that dying with dignity — without being kept alive by machines against your wishes — is a fundamental right in India.* ### What Can You Actually Specify? A Living Will allows you to state your preferences clearly. Common instructions include: - No ventilator support if there is no reasonable chance of recovery - No Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) — sometimes referred to as a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order - No artificial prolongation of life through machines or feeding tubes - Comfort and palliative care only — meaning pain management and dignity, not invasive intervention You can also specify what you do want, not just what you do not. Some people want every possible treatment attempted. The document works either way — it captures your actual preferences, whatever they are. The goal is not to limit care. The goal is to make sure the care you receive reflects what you actually want. ### It Is Not Perfect Yet — And That Is Worth Acknowledging Part of why this topic gets avoided is that people sense it is complicated, and they are not wrong. The legal right exists. But implementation across Indian hospitals is still inconsistent, and that gap is real. **Hospitals often continue treatment regardless** Once a patient is admitted and treatment has begun, stopping it becomes legally and professionally difficult for doctors — even if a Living Will is on record. Starting treatment is straightforward. Stopping it is not. **Family disagreements can override written wishes** Even with a directive in place, hospitals tend to defer to family consensus rather than risk a legal dispute. If one family member insists on continuing treatment and another does not, the written document can get sidelined. This is the system's most significant weakness right now. **Doctors face genuine competing pressures** Physicians are caught between the patient's stated wishes, the family's emotional state, and their own legal liability. Under that pressure, the safest path — continuing treatment — is usually the one taken. Kerala is ahead of the rest of India on this, having developed clear clinical protocols for end-of-life decisions and brain death certification. It is a sign of where the country is heading, even if it is not there uniformly yet. > *The honest summary: the law opened the door. Hospitals and policy are still working out how to walk through it. But a properly registered directive, known in advance to your family and physician, still meaningfully improves the odds that your wishes are followed.* ### The Financial Reality Nobody Mentions This is the part that connects most directly to financial planning — and it is almost never discussed in this context. Late-stage hospitalization is expensive. ICU care, ventilators, dialysis, repeated imaging, specialist consultations — the bill escalates fast, and it does so during a period when families are least equipped to make clear-headed decisions. Three things drive this: - Doctors practice defensive medicine — they keep treating to avoid being accused of giving up too early - ICU beds and procedures are among the highest revenue generators in hospital economics - Families in distress almost always say do everything possible, and that instruction is rarely questioned The outcome, in too many cases, is financial devastation — savings exhausted, insurance limits hit, loans taken — for treatment that the medical team privately knows is unlikely to change the prognosis. This is not a criticism of families. It is a structural problem that a Living Will helps address. When preferences are clearly documented in advance — before a crisis, before emotions take over — it gives both the family and the medical team a legitimate, guilt-free basis to shift toward comfort care rather than continued escalation. > *End-of-life financial devastation is one of the most under appreciated risks in family financial planning. A Living Will is not just a medical document. It is a form of financial protection too.* ### How to Make One Valid Creating a legally valid Advance Medical Directive in India is more bureaucratic than it should be — but it is entirely manageable. - The document must be signed in front of two independent witnesses - It must be countersigned by a Judicial Magistrate First Class - Copies should be given to family members who are likely to be involved in medical decisions - Your primary physician should be informed and a copy placed in your medical records - Store it alongside your other critical documents — your Will, insurance policies, investment records The registration step is not optional if you want it taken seriously. A document nobody has seen before an emergency will likely be set aside under pressure. One that is formally registered, shared with family in advance, and known to your doctor has a genuine chance of being followed. ### Why This Conversation Barely Happens In many countries, a Living Will is as routine as writing a financial will. In India, it is still almost taboo. Part of this is cultural — death is not something most families discuss openly. Mentioning end-of-life planning can feel like inviting the outcome, or like a failure of optimism. There is also a discomfort with the idea of limiting treatment — it can feel like not fighting hard enough for someone you love. But here is what those families who have been through the alternative will tell you: the absence of a directive does not protect anyone from hard decisions. It just means those decisions get made in the worst possible conditions — under time pressure, in grief, without guidance. A Living Will is not giving up. It is making a considered choice about the kind of care you want — before the moment arrives when choosing clearly is no longer possible. Done right, it is an act of clarity and love, not resignation. ### Where This Fits in Your Planning A Living Will belongs in the same conversation as your financial will, your insurance nominations, and your investment succession plan. It is part of what complete planning actually looks like. The document may not be perfect today. The system will take time to catch up to the law. But something in place — properly registered, shared with the right people, understood by your family — is meaningfully better than the alternative. Because the alternative is not neutrality. The alternative is ambiguity. And ambiguity, at the end of life, has real costs — financial, emotional, and relational. If you would like to understand how this fits into your overall estate and financial planning, we are happy to walk through it with you. \--- *This article is for educational purposes only and does not constitute legal or medical advice. This helps us cover our expenses. Read until the end, to learn how much we get. These days many finfluencers online talk about going the direct plan route to save fees. Yes, over a long term you may save a bit. But you lose out on good advice. What those finfluencers don't tell you is that when things go bad or you have a question – you have to desperately search the internet for answers, and even after many hours of researching – you won't find an answer for your personal situation. You see, these finfluencers are usually trying to make you think they're saints, when actually they're trying to get "eyeballs" i.e. viewership, because higher the views, higher the advertising income. **When something is free, you are the product.** > Direct Plans are meant for DIY (Do It Yourself or as we like to say... Direct It Yourself) Investors. Lost or too busy? There are over 1,000 schemes to choose from. They all look similar, and what happens after you buy? Who do you ask for help? Can you setup an STP (Systematic Transfer Plan)? How do you allocate? What happens when you have to update your email/mobile, which RTA do you contact? How is your investments held, Demat or SOA? What's the tax implication when you sell? What happens when the market crashes - what do you do? And many more such questions are addressed by an advisor or distributor. At the end of the day, wouldn't you like to have someone take care of the nitty gritty, while you live your life! **Life is too short to make it complicated.** ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/11/bayf-folio-direct-vs-regular.webp) **Now, not all distributors are alike**. > When you make a mutual fund **investment through a bank-owned broking platform (app)** – you are being offered regular plans, **but without any advice!** So here are 3 key points why going the regular route might be best: 1\. **Expertise**: Regular plans benefit from the expertise of financial experts (mutual fund distributors or advisors), which can be crucial for new or less experienced investors. 2\. **Personalized Advice**: Distributors, though not permitted to give 'advice' as per SEBI, can give 'incidental advice' only related to mutual funds (there is an ongoing discussion on this). They can provide you personalized recommendations based on market conditions and individual financial situations. 3\. **Behavioral Support**: When the markets start crashing or correcting – Advisors / Distributors can help investors stay disciplined during market volatility, which can lead to better long-term investment outcomes. The last point is the most important. *Which is why we will wear this T-Shirt just to remind you...* ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2024/12/t-shirt-keep-sipping-Photoroom.png) Keep Calm & Carry On SIPping If you're already a client with us, you're in good hands! URL: https://bayfol.io/preparing-vs-planning/ Last updated: 2025-11-23T05:53:34.000Z You've heard of financial planning, well, let's go through the basics. ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/11/prepare-vs-plan-o-1.png) Here's the difference: - **Planning assumes order.** Markets go up 12% every year (statistically). Your SIP runs smoothly, your retirement fund grows as planned. - **Preparation assumes chaos.** Markets will crash. Income may stop. Job loss happens. Emotions will be tested. But what we do at BayFolio, is also ***prepare*** you. That's because when the markets are going up, and in the long term, they do - you can expect a certain direction. However, in the short term, investors forget, or some haven't even experienced chaos yet. Remember Covid 2020 crash? Markets fell 40% in weeks. Some were investing for the first time and took the leap to start. Great! However, think about those who were investing from 2018, 2019? They did not expect that market could fall so much, it was as if the world was coming to an end. Crashes do happen, every few years, and yet in the long term, the market continues to go up. Sometimes the market recovers fast, sometimes, it takes years. But the bigger question to ask yourself, is **when (not if) the market crashes** next time - will you be prepared? **Ask yourself:** Do I have cash ready to invest when markets are down 30%? Do I have funds on standby, that I can deploy at short notice? Will my income be affected during a crash or recession, that I'll have to stop my regular SIP? Can I continue my SIPs if my income drops? Will I panic-sell, or stay calm? Have I mentally rehearsed such a scenario? **What are you doing to prepare yourself?** *Preparation beats planning, any day.* The investors who survive and thrive through multiple market cycles aren't necessarily the best planners - they're the best preparers. ### KYC Validation: validated v/s registered v/s hold URL: https://bayfol.io/kyc/ Last updated: 2025-11-02T08:27:52.000Z One of the most important things before investing, is ensuring your KYC i.e. Know Your Customer is completed & validated. The KYC done for mutual fund investing is different from the KYC done by your bank. There are 3 different KYC statuses. You want to ensure you are **KYC Validated**. If your KYC is validated, you will have a smooth time doing any investments. ****If you're an NRI**, you may not have a problem if your KYC status is KYC Registered. But after April 2026 - it could become mandatory to have a KYC Validated status. Better sort this out earlier - on your next India trip or ask your advisor, so you won't have any headaches down the road. ### What's the difference between each, and what does it imply? 🟢 ****KYC VALIDATED:** → ****Relax! You have to do nothing at all! You're gold!** → Over 70% of investors are KYC Validated, you too are one of them. → You can do ANY transaction in any mutual fund, ANYTIME. 🟡 ****KYC REGISTERED:** → You can ****continue making transactions in all your existing** Mutual Fund investments. → To ****invest in a new mutual fund, you'll need to update your KYC status**. → You can upgrade to 'KYC Validated' by completing the KYC Update process. → The process is simple and takes only a few minutes to complete. 🔴 ****KYC HOLD:** → You will ****need to resolve this** before doing any transaction. → Check the reason for status (Mobile/Email not validated, PAN-Aadhaar not linked, etc.) → Remediate the issues by following steps on the mutual fund website or speak to your Mutual Fund Distributor / Advisor. → Once resolved, your status will change to Registered/Validated. ### How do you check your KYC status? Simple, you'll need your PAN number. Then head over to: [KYC Status Check | KARVY KRA![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/icon/favicon-1.ico)KARVYKRA![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/thumbnail/logo-2020.png)](https://karvykra.com/KARVYKRAKYCEnquiry.aspx?ref=bayfol.io) Check Your KYC Status Enter your 10-digit PAN and captcha and click on Submit. Your KYC Status will pop up, you can take a screenshot or download the PDF for your records. If your status is KYC validated, you're all good to go. Don't worry. However, if your status is KYC registered (or worse, hold) — then get this fixed. Reach out to your distributor or advisor and ask them how to resolve this. ### Mutual Funds Holding Explained: Demat with CDSL/NSDL v/s Registrar Records by CAMS & KFintech URL: https://bayfol.io/mf-cdsl-nsdl-cams-kfintech/ Last updated: 2026-01-01T03:56:28.000Z Mutual funds in India can be stored either in electronic (DEMAT) form or as a Statement of Account (SOA). As you might be aware, we prefer the more [universal format of SOA](https://bayfol.io/farewell/). > In short: **you don't need a demat account** to buy mutual funds; it adds cost and friction. But there are a couple of players at work, so let's understand this to gain an understanding. You may hear their names: CDSL, NSDL, CAMS & KFintech. Let's break it down for you. The **two players** are: 1. **Depository Participants (DPs)** i.e. CDSL & NSDL 2. **Registrar Transfer Agents (RTAs)** i.e. CAMS & KFintech **CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited**) and **NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited)** are two government-registered securities depositories (started in 1990s) that allow investors to hold their investments in dematerialized (non physical) format. These investments may include stocks, bonds and even mutual funds. These demat accounts are typically created by banks and brokerages. CDSL primarily operates with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) who is also a shareholder. NSDL primarily operates with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) who is also a shareholder. Both are SEBI regulated. **CAMS (Computer Age Management Services)** and **KFintech** are the main Registrar & Transfer Agents (RTAs) that maintain investor records and process transactions for ALL mutual funds in India, whether held in DEMAT or SOA mode - they can handle both. They work ***directly*** with the Asset Management Companies (AMCs) i.e. mutual fund companies to maintain the records. Both are SEBI regulated. They have split the workload between themselves, so half the AMCs are with CAMS and the other half are with KFintech. ### **So where are your mutual funds stored?** It can be one of the two: 1. **Statement of Account (SOA):** This is the universal format - where units are recorded **directly with an AMC** and/or transaction records are processed by the RTAs (CAMS / KFintech). 2. **Demat Account (DEMAT)**: This is what banks & brokerages typically use - where units are held electronically via a "demat account" through registered depositories like CDSL and NSDL. This format, allows you to see not just your mutual funds, but other securities like stocks, bonds etc. Your **Consolidated Account Statement aka CAS** \- is what brings together your investment holding records. While CAMS & KFintech have tied up to have a single CAS. CDSL and NSDL offer their own CAS statements. If your mutual funds are in the SOA format, both CDSL and NSDL will attempt to sync with CAMS & KFintech for your holdings, and show everything in their respective statement. But your CAMS(& Kfintech) CAS will not show your other securities, they will only show mutual funds you hold directly with the AMC i.e. mutual fund company. ### **What is the key difference, and which is better?** - **With SOA:** Investor ↔ AMC/RTA (directly & efficient). - **With Demat:** Investor ↔ Broker ↔ AMC/RTA - you don't need an intermediary, as mutual funds are by default in dematerialized format. - SOA mode has features like **redemption in fractional** rupees - where investors can redeem mutual funds by specifying the exact rupee amount, including fractional units, providing more flexibility. - **Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP)**, and **Systematic Transfer Plan (STP)** are only supported in SOA mode, and not supported in DEMAT mode. - However - under SOA mode - nomination and updates are done per AMC folio (which is why we also try to use 1 folio for 1 AMC), requiring separate maintenance for each fund. Unlike in in DEMAT, where it can be done at the account level. This is both a pro & con, because you gain more flexibility at the folio level if required. e.g. you can have a specific folio for one nominee, and another folio with another nominee. - With SOA - there is no third party lock in or annual maintenance cost. You can transact directly with the AMC/RTA. ### **What is Advisor / Distributor Code Mapping & where is it stored?** Advisor / Distributor code mapping in mutual funds refers to the process of linking or assigning a unique code - the ARN (AMFI Registration Number) - of a mutual fund advisor or distributor. This mapping is crucial for regulatory compliance, transparency, and ensuring that the right advisor is attributed to a client's investment for proper service responsibility and commission tracking. This ensures that only certified & regulated professionals handle investments, reducing the risk of fraud or mis-selling. You will find this code in your CAMS (& KFintech) CAS statement, against each folio. **Further reading (if required):** [Download Your Mutual Fund CAS (Consolidated Account Statement)Download your Mutual Fund Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) via CAMS+KFintech![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/icon/bayfolio-icon-12.png)BayFolioBayFolio Partners![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/thumbnail/3-7a70512dfab19b21-1.png)](https://bayfol.io/cas/) If your goal is long-term investing in open‑ended Indian mutual funds (including SIPs), the SOA route via AMC/RTA typically offers the cleanest, lowest-friction path with fewer ongoing Demat charges. Portfolio visibility is native on AMC/RTA portals. Use Demat when you need market trading: Stocks & ETFs. If you don't trade those, Demat adds costs without clear benefits to your MF workflow. ### SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) Frequency & Timing URL: https://bayfol.io/sip-timing/ Last updated: 2025-05-29T05:15:38.000Z Quite often, we get the question - should we do the SIP daily, weekly or monthly. Sometimes, we're also asked if we do this on a particular day of the week, will it generate better returns? **The short answer is...** > **It doesn't matter.** Over the long term (meaning 5,7 or 10 year horizon) — it doesn't make much difference whether it is daily, weekly or monthly. The difference is so small, you shouldn't even think about it. For those who insist on weekly, we remind them that the paper work will be huge, as there will be a huge number of entries (52 weeks in a year x each fund). In short, your chartered accountant may charge you more ₹₹₹ for filing the Income Tax Returns, to compensate for his/her effort! **As a best practice at BayFolio - we select monthly by default, and we give the choice of either 1st of the month or 15th of the month.** --- Now, that is out of the way, there are still some curious as to what the data suggests, well, WhiteOak Mutual Fund did a study, and here is a summary of the results: ### 1) What is the best frequency to select for SIP - daily, weekly or monthly? ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/05/image-6.png) AGAIN... IT DOESN't MATTER. Though we suggest monthly to avoid too much paperwork. ### 2) Which is the best date to do a monthly SIP? ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/05/image-5.png) IT DOESN'T MATTER. We suggest either doing 1st of the month, or 15th of the month. ### 3) What is an ideal investing time horizon for SIP? ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/05/image.png) ****5 YEARS** OR MORE... ### 4) Which is better, starting SIP at the Top or Bottom? ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/05/image-1.png) PAY ATTENTION TO LAST COLUMN IRR - it is more or less the same, no matter which peak you start investing. ⚠️ The biggest risk is not the market, but missing out on compounding over time. ### 5) Isn't it better if I time my monthly purchases? ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/05/image-2.png) IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER. Just SIP! ⚠️ It's time in the market, not timing the market — that is important. ### 6) Large Cap, Mid Cap or Small Cap SIP? ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/05/image-3.png) When you compare, MIDCAP wins... overall. ### 7) Should you opt for SIP TOP UP? ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/05/image-8.png) ****Normal SIP** v/s ****Fixed SIP (**₹****)Top-Up** v/s ****Variable SIP (%) Top-up** ⚠️ As you can see, it really doesn't matter. What matters is that you start the SIP and stick with it for at least 5 years, if not more. ### Tax (Loss / Gain) Harvesting URL: https://bayfol.io/tax-harvesting/ Last updated: 2025-04-09T12:09:36.000Z ### What is Tax Harvesting? Tax harvesting is a strategic AND legal method to reduce your tax liability, each year. There are two options available to you: 1. Tax LOSS Harvesting 2. Tax GAIN Harvesting **Tax LOSS Harvesting** – instead of holding on to losing stocks, you can book a loss now, and use it to save tax. **Tax GAIN Harvesting** – every year, if you have ₹1.25 lakhs of profit to book, you can realize it TAX-FREE! (who would say no to that!?) ### What is the Deadline for Tax Harvesting? Every year, before the 31st March of that Financial Year, you can do tax harvesting. Though we recommend you don't leave it to the last minute, instead mark your calendar in the month of February or the first two weeks of March for this. ### So how is Tax Harvesting done? Depending on what you're doing, whether it be tax loss harvesting or tax gain harvesting – here are the steps below (please consult with your tax advisor): **Tax Loss Harvesting** → Identify Underperformers & SELL the mutual funds (or stocks) that are in a loss. → Use those losses to offset capital gains you have booked earlier. This reduces your tax liability. And the good thing is that **you can carry forward capital losses** and offset them against capital gains for **up to 8 years**. **Tax Gain Harvesting** → SELL mutual funds (or stocks) with gains upto ₹1.25 lakh (which you are permitted as per IT Act). The capital gains up to ₹1.25 lakh is TAX-FREE. → BUY the same mutual funds (or stocks) back the next day – this will be treated like a fresh buy, on that day. ### Note: Setting Off Capital Losses in Tax-Loss Harvesting When setting (netting) off losses with tax-loss harvesting, you need to keep the following points in mind: - **Long Term Capital Loss (LTCL)** can be set-off against → - Long Term Capital Gain (LTCG). - **Short Term Capital Loss (STCL)** can be set-off against → - both Short Term Capital Gain (STCG) and/or Long Term Capital Gain (LTCG). ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/04/image-3.png) In short, booking a loss in the short term, is not such a bad idea, you get to set it off against both short term AND long term gains & carry forward the loss. [Click here to learn more](https://cleartax.in/s/set-off-carry-forward-losses?ref=bayfol.io). ### Keep In Mind: Be Careful You should only BUY BACK the NEXT day, not the same day. If you buy back the same day, it will be treated as an "intraday" trade – and you will not receive any of the tax harvesting benefits. Having the same amount of cash as you're selling already in your trading/bank account will be beneficial, otherwise you will have to wait for the cash to hit your account (which may take a day or two) before you can buy back mutual funds (or stocks). And because of this, the following point is important: There is a possibility that the next day the price can go up. This is the drawback, and a matter of (bad) luck. It may go up by a bit sometimes, but given what we have seen in 2025 – it could also shoot up a few percentage points! ### Summary You can discuss the following as part of your tax planning process, with your tax accountant or advisor: ![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/2025/04/image-1.png) ⚠️ This information is for general guidance only and does not constitute tax advice; it is recommended to consult a tax professional for personalized advice. ### Why every family needs an Independent Insurance Advisor right now! It is only done for banks registered with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and sometimes referred to as eNACH. While an upper limit is set, only the approved SIP amount will go through. You can for instance, have an upper limit of ₹1,00,000 (one lakh), but your approved SIP for ₹10,000 will only go thru. However, if you want to increase your SIP to above ₹1 lakh, then you’ll have to repeat the Banking eMandate setup process. Sometimes, if you set a higher limit, you also have the advantage of using it to do ad hoc (lumpsum) mutual fund investments with a single click. Setting up is a simple and fast digital process (though we can also do it offline, the physical process takes more time). You can change (modify) the instruction or cancel it online as well. ### **What are the benefits of setting up an eMandate?** By automating your SIPs with eMandates, you avoid delays and ensure a hassle-free, consistent investment journey. You do not need to remember payment dates or make manual transfers or worry about any signature mismatch. This ensures your investing happens without fail, and you won’t need to worry about timing or consistency or any other transactional failures. ### **Are there any fees for eMandates?** While there are no fees/charges by mutual fund houses for Banking eMandates, your bank may charge a fee for mandate verification, anywhere between ₹50 - ₹200 one-time. Here is a [list of banks](https://support.zerodha.com/category/funds/mandate/other-emandate-related-queries/articles/charges-for-emandates?ref=bayfol.io) that do charge. However, **if an SIP is missed, due to insufficient balance** (and this can be upto 3 times, before your SIP is cancelled) — this will trigger an eNACH transaction failure — and for each failure, you could be charged a penalty by the bank, anywhere between ₹200 - ₹500 per fund depending on the bank. You can always speak to your bank relationship manager, but it is better to avoid missing SIPs by maintaining the correct balance for investing. ### **Will a missed SIP affect my CIBIL Score?** A missed SIP due to insufficient balance does not directly affect your CIBIL score because SIP payments are not loans or credit obligations. Mutual Fund SIPs are treated as voluntary investments, not debt repayments. ### How To Whitelist BayFolio Emails URL: https://bayfol.io/whitelist/ Last updated: 2025-09-02T03:07:15.000Z ⚠️ Whitelisting an email address ensures messages from trusted senders consistently reach your inbox instead of being filtered into spam. To ensure you receive all communications from us, please whitelist our domain - You can whitelist our domain ****@bayfolio.com** To whitelist email domain (**\*@bayfolio.com**) or a specific address in Outlook.com means adding it to a group called **Safe senders**. A whitelisted address will bypass Outlook spam filters and be delivered to your inbox. To add an address or domain to the Safe senders list: 1) Sign in to your Outlook inbox on the web. 2) Select the **gear icon** in the top right corner to access **Settings**. 3) On the left sidebar, click on **Mail**, then navigate to **Junk email**. 4) Click on **+Add** under **Safe senders and domains** to add a contact to the allowed list. 5) Enter the domain name (**\*@bayfolio.com**) or email address you wish to add to **Safe senders**. Make sure to include the @ character for domain names. Alternatively, you can simply add an individual address that has sent you a message to your Outlook Contacts. Though they lead to the same result, this method is quicker and more efficient than manually entering information. ### Whitelisting in Outlook mobile app You can also whitelist emails in Outlook using your mobile device. Here’s how: 1. Open the Outlook mobile app. 2. Open a message from a sender you want to whitelist. 3. Click on the **three dots** on the top. 4. Click **Move to Focused Inbox**. 5. In the pop-up window, click **Always Move** to save your decision. To ensure you receive all communications from us, please whitelist our domain - You can whitelist our domain ****@bayfolio.com** Prevent important emails from ending up in your spam folder by whitelisting trusted senders in Gmail. This process creates a filter that ensures all future messages from specified addresses or domains will always reach your inbox. ### Steps to whitelist @bayfolio.com in Gmail: 1. **Access Gmail Settings** \- Log into your Gmail account and click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner. Select "See all settings" from the dropdown menu. 2. **Create a New Filter** \- Navigate to the "Filters and Blocked Addresses" tab and click "Create a new filter." 3. **Specify the Sender** \- In the "From" field, enter the email address or domain you want to whitelist (use **\*@bayfolio.com** to whitelist our entire domain). 4. **Set Filter Actions** \- Click "Create filter," then check the box next to "Never send it to Spam" to ensure these messages always reach your inbox. 5. **Save Your Settings** \- Click "Create filter" again to save your new whitelist rule. ### Additional Options: Gmail's filter system also allows you to automatically star these emails, apply custom labels, mark them as important, or set up other organizational actions for whitelisted senders. Once completed, all future emails from @bayfolio.com will bypass Gmail's spam filters and deliver directly to your inbox. ### Whitelisting Emails in the Gmail Mobile App While the Gmail mobile app doesn't offer the same advanced filtering options as the web version, you can still whitelist senders directly from your spam folder. Steps to whitelist a sender on mobile: 1. **Open the Gmail App** \- Launch the Gmail app on your mobile device. 2. **Access Your Spam Folder** \- Navigate to the "Spam" folder (you may need to expand the menu to find it). 3. **Select the Email** \- Find and tap on the message from the sender you want to whitelist. 4. **Mark as Not Spam** \- Tap "Report not spam" or the "Not spam" button. This action tells Gmail that messages from this sender are legitimate. Once you've marked an email as "not spam," Gmail will learn to deliver future messages from that sender to your inbox automatically. Another part of this evolution is DigiLocker - a wallet (drive) by the Government of India to store all your essential and important records digitally & securely. You can access these documents stored, anytime, anywhere - reducing paperwork and time. > Going forward, DigiLocker, will be the gold standard for KYC approval, reducing the time to do KYC from days to less than 5 minutes. This is thanks to the Single SignOn Service \[MeriPehchaan\]. For this reason, we want to ensure all our clients are setup on DigiLocker, making the KYC process – easier & faster. **The most important two documents to have setup on your DigiLocker are:** 1. **Aadhar** 2. **PAN** To complete DigiLocker's setup, you should also have on hand: **☐ Mobile** (preferably a post paid plan, so you won't forget to recharge) **☐ Email** DigiLocker & Aadhar use the OTP (One Time Password) verification system, so it is best to have the above active. **Here are some important notes (to save headaches):** - Make sure your **Aadhar and PAN both have the same exact name**. IT Systems are checking both, so please double check for: - no spelling mistakes; and - no abbreviations or initials. - Make sure your **Aadhar have both the mobile and email updated**. You can ONLY update the mobile and email at your nearest Aadhar centre, you cannot do it online. It will cost you ₹50 per update, so please get that done before starting anything. - Remember to **add Nominee details** in your DigiLocker as well, this may be useful in the future. - If your DigiLocker is ready, you should see a green \[verified\] label under your profile photo. - As part of your financial house keeping, also **ensure your Passport & Bank account have the same name displayed as in your PAN & Aadhar**. Consistency across documents, will save you headaches in the future. ### Website (Signup & Login) [DigiLocker: An Initiative Towards Paperless GovernanceAimed at idea of paperless governance, DigiLocker is a key initiative of Digital India Programme, is a platform for issuance & verification of documents in a digital way![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/icon/favicon-4.png)DigiLocker](https://www.digilocker.gov.in/?ref=bayfol.io) ### Google Play Store (Download) [DigiLocker – Apps on Google PlayDigiLocker - a simple and secure document wallet![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/icon/favicon_v3.ico)National eGovernance Division, Government of India![](https://bayfol.io/content/images/thumbnail/EqNJ0V0N0vzNKxdOl-Uz4OW5t8b4BhROYEKvQVqi1s1O_Ng2E_AobK1YB5hVFvpD5Yk)](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digilocker.android&hl=en%5FIN&ref=bayfol.io) ### Apple App Store (Download) [‎DigiLocker‎DigiLocker – A simple and secure document wallet for Citizens. SOA - **Statement of Accounts** (universal) format 2. DEMAT - **Dematerialised** (via broker) format **At BayFolio, we follow the SOA format, as this is universal.** A demat format (via broker) would require you to transfer your portfolio from one demat to another demat, and things may get complicated. With demat format, you are in a 'broker' prison. > To avoid this hassle, we adopted the SOA format standard for ease of transition. As we do not wish to lock in our clients. We want our farewells to be just as enjoyable as our welcomes. If you ever decide to leave BayFolio (we will miss you 🙁 of course), you can download the apps from any one of the following players below and enter your PAN details to view your mutual fund portfolio – and you're good to go. You can freely sell any mutual funds you bought via BayFolio. Half an hour?** If so, watch this short film – One Idiot. Created in collaboration with Amole Gupte (of "Taare Zameen Par" fame), this movie is the story of the "Idiot", Bugs. Bugs, in the movie, is the affable, run-of-the-mill neighbourhood "uncle ji" who, by the looks of it, does nothing in life and lives a frugal life. Wearing rubber chappals and debating with the vegetable vendor on the price of grocery, he is the laughing stock of the teenagers, as well as most other residents in the building. Through the movie, however, slowly, the real worth of this "Idiot" emerges... **Remember:** This [short film was published](https://youtu.be/vU1l1TB7GzI?si=cSe92xBj3eURbFCB&ref=bayfol.io) around 11 years ago (December 2012). India is growing.** And if you're looking for his return, [here it is](https://youtu.be/QrnlvLA8gMs?ref=bayfol.io). ### We're launching soon...
